INVITED SPEAKER SEMINAR - Developing Standards with Electronic Health Records

Abstract
The IEEE Standards Association ICAID workgroup for Data Quality Standards for Electronic Health Records is working diligently on the development of worldwide standards with electronic health records. The main objective of this group is to develop standards that ensure quality, reliability, and identification of electronic health record systems. Since IEEE spearheads the initiatives on electronic communications across the globe it is perfectly positioned to deliver standards on communications between electronic health record systems across the globe. The talk will focus on the associated opportunities for individuals in Canada to be a part of these initiatives.
Biography
Dr. Varadraj Gurupur is currently working as an Associate Professor with the School of Health Management and Informatics and has a joint appointment with the Department of Computer Science, and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering with the University of Central Florida (UCF). He is also the founding member of the Center for Decision Support Systems and Informatics at UCF. Dr. Gurupur received his Doctoral degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2010. He has authored/co-authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Gurupur is a recipient of several honors and awards such as AHIMA Triumph Award for Research, AHIMA Triumph Award for Innovation and Joseph M. Biedenbach Outstanding Engineering Education Award from IEEE Region 3 and is currently serving as the HTB representative for IEEE Region 3.
